The son of a respected former Bulgarian diplomat in Manhattan has been charged with building a New York-based weed empire, New York Post reported, citing prosecutors.
Economics whiz Iani Tassev, 28, the son of Bulgaria's deputy finance minister and ex-city diplomat Stamen Tassev, used his business acumen to build his illicit pot enterprise, Brooklyn federal prosecutors say.
He allegedly ran a drug distribution business that smuggled more than 1,000 kilos of high-potency pot across the Canadian border through the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation.
His dad, Stamen, who once served at Bulgaria's consulate in New York, is not charged with any wrongdoing and was not involved in any illegal activities, authorities said.
Iani Tassev's lawyer, Gaspar Castillo Jr., said his client is innocent and will fight the charges.
