Bulgarian Ethnic Turks Mull Leader's Presidential Run

The Bulgarian ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms, DPS, is considering nominating its leader, Ahmed Dogan, to run for President in the upcoming elections.

The announcement was made in a radio interview by one of the Dogan's deputies – Rushen Riza, who said the party is debating on having their own presidential candidate because they are the only political formation in the country which cares and protects all citizens regardless of their ethnic background or religion.

Riza, however, did not discount the possibility to support candidates of other parties, explaining DPS is going to negotiate with other liberal formations before making a final decision.

DPS say the upcoming vote is crucial because it would map out the platform for the next 10 years, both in the political left and right.

The DPS functionary further accused the ruling Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party of being the moving force behind the defection of the former right hand of Dogan, Kasim Dal, pointing out the latter has admitted close friendship with Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, and GERB Culture Minister, Vezdhi Rashidov.

Riza declared the party is still moving forward and gaining ground despite Dal's accusations.

"This is not the Kasim Dal we used to know. He is obsessed by personal ambitions and desire for revenge," the Deputy DPS leader stressed.
