The city of Gabrovo, known as the Bulgarian "Laughter Kingdom," celebrates Friday April Fool's Day.

Gabrovo is located some 220 km North-East from the capital Sofia. The city's residents are famous for their unique sense of humor and stinginess. These are the people who clip the tails of their cats to keep the room warmer and stop their watches at night to spare the worn-out of the cog-wheels.

The city is also the residence the renowned House of Humor, which marks Friday its 39th anniversary.

The Gabrovo City Hall declared April 1 an open-door day when everyone can visit the House of Humor free of charge and enjoy all exhibits and entertainment.

As part of the Friday agenda, the Transport Minister, Aleksander Tsvetkov and Mayor, Nikolay Sirakov, will validate a special post stamp, the first ever to be dedicated to Gabrovo.

There will be a contest for children from the city to tell the best joke or funny tale; a European graphics exhibit, and showing of Bulgarian movies and animation from the recent past, among others.

"Laughter has remained the most stable currency of all," the late Radoi Ralin, one of Bulgaria's most prominent writers and great friend of Gabrovo, wrote, affirming Gabrovtsi's belief that "the world lasts because it laughs".
