Vice Minister Fu: China Sympathizes with Japan over Earthquake

China sympathizes very much with Japan's suffering caused by the recent 9.0-magnitude earthquake, China's Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Fu Ying told Novinite.com (Sofia News Agency) in an exclusive interview.

"China has experienced lots of natural calamities. We are one of the countries most frequently hit by natural calamities. Therefore, we very much sympathize with the people of Japan. What happened there is shocking, it is the most serious earthquake. There was also the tsunami, and then the threat of contamination by nuclear radiation over the crisis at the Fukushima nuclear power plant. China was among the first countries to send condolences and a rescue team. We have also been sending assistance in kind, around 200 million RMB worth of deliveries and we promise to continue to provide assistance. There is lots of help coming from China," Vice Minister Fu said.

She has pointed out that the importance of the trilateral meeting of the Foreign Ministers of China, Korea, and Japan that was held in Tokyo shortly after the March 11 earthquake to show solidarity with Japan. She also expressed China's high respect for the brave efforts of the Japanese rescue units working to fix the situation with the damaged nuclear plant in Fukushima.

Fu further explained that the nuclear crisis caused by the Japanese earthquake has moved China to halt and re-examine its plans for the construction of new NPPs.

"It's hard to imagine that the world can totally give up nuclear energy. For many countries this is still one of the sustainable energy choices but the crisis in Japan is a wake-up call to humankind. We need to make extra efforts to guarantee the safety of such facilities," the Vice Minister commented.
