Bulgaria's Unemployment Rate Up by 3.4% 2010 y/y

Bulgaria's 2010 unemployment rate was 10.2%, which is a 3.4% increase year on year, according to the national Statistical Institute's latest labor force survey.

In 2010, Bulgaria's economically active population aged 15 - 64 was 3 356.3 thousand and

accounted 66.5% of the population in the age group. Compared to 2009 the activity rate (15-64) went down by 0.7 percentage points.

The total number of employed people reached 3 052.800, of which 3 010.400 aged 15-64 and in comparison with 2009 decreased by 6.2% and 6.1% respectively.

The employment rate (15-64) was 59.7%, by 2.9 percentage points lower in comparison with 2009 (by gender: 63.0% for men and 56.4% for women).

The employment rate for the age group 20-64 years (an indicator laid down in the European Commission strategy Europe 2020) fell by 3.4 percentage points compared to 2009 and achieved 65.4% (69.1% for men and 61.7% for women).

In 2010 the employment rate of those aged 55-64 reached 43.5% and in comparison with 2009 declined by 2.6 percentage points - by 3.8 percentage points for men (to 50.3%) and by 1.5 percentage points for women (to 37.7%).
