Some 200 protesters are reported shot in the Bahraini town of Sitra, according to witnesses from the local hospitals.

Meanwhile, the government imposed a state of emergence Tuesday that is set to last for three months and will limit the right to protests.

After the news the streets in capital Manama were emptied by protesters, but rallies continued in other parts of the country.

Tuesday the UK and Russia called for restraint and an immediate stop to violence in the Persian Gulf country.

Other countries from the Gulf have deployed military units in Bahrain in a bid to limit violence and support king Hamad ibn Isa Al Khalifa.

This has provoked the ire of Iran, who claimed this is interference with the country's internal affairs.

The Al Khalifa royal family is Sunni and rules over a population composed predominantly of Shiites.
