Opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party has asked for the resignation of Minister of Infrastructure Rosen Plevneliev over concerns that the construction of the Trakiya Highway is technically flawed.

Trakiya Highway, and infrastructure in general, have turned out to be one of the very top priorities of Bulgaria's center-right GERB cabinet, with Plevneliev getting ever greater prominence as a minister lately.

Tuesday socialist leader Sergey Stanishev gave a special press-conference at which he claimed his party has information that the construction of Trakiya is done in a substandart fashion.

"The stretch between Stara Zagora and Nova Zagora is being done with a foundation of industrial ash, rather than the appropriate gravel or stones, which will lead to a failure of the road surface in a very short time," said Stanishev.

The socialist leader called for Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure Plevneliev to resign, for he had a number of times committed to the excellent quality of the project.

He also insisted that the section be reworked, which he estimated will cost some EUR 13 M of taxpayers' money.
