EU Calls for Urgent International Atomic Agency Meeting

The European Union placed a request to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to call an emergency meeting of its members in Vienna next week.

The EU request aims at opening a discussion about the incidents with nuclear reactors in Japan after the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck the country on March 11.

EU Energy Commissioner, Gunther Oettinger, has appealed to the IAEA Director General, Yukiya Amano, to convene the organization's Member States to assess the current situation and talk about future nuclear safety plans and crisis reaction.

Oettinger has called two emergency meetings in Brussels Tuesday - of nuclear experts to discuss the option of EU entirely giving up nuclear energy in the future and of EU Energy Ministers to debate European safety standards and plans for the EU Nuclear Power Plants.
