Water in a pool storing spent nuclear fuel at the No. 4 reactor that caught fire Tuesday morning at the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant may be boiling, the Japanese Kyodo agency reports.

If the water is boiling and evaporating, it would expose the fuel rods, which are encased in safety containers meant to prevent them from resuming nuclear reactions, nuclear officials said for AoL, claiming this scenario was unlikely.

The reactor was in meintenance when the devastating 9.0 earthquake jolted Fukushima Prefecture and other areas in northeastern Japan on Friday, according to the official in charge of the facility, as cited by Kyodo.
