Bulgarians Most Materially Deprived in EU

Bulgaria's material deprivation rate is 55.5%, with the EU average equal to 17%, according to spring Consumer Scoreboard published by the European Commission.

The Balkan country is followed by its neighbor Romania with 49% and Hungary with 41%. The list is topped by Luxembourg, where a mere 4% are materially depraved, followed by the Netherlands and Sweden with 5%.

The percentage of Bulgarian consumers who feel adequately protected by existing measures is the lowest in the EU, the scoreboard for 2010  says. In a similar position is the country's consumer trust in consumer organization and sellers / providers to respect their consumer rights. The percentage of Bulgarian consumers who find it easy to use ADR mechanisms is the also the lowest in the Union.

A large proportion of Bulgarian retailers have encountered advertisements / offers in the market which are either fraudulent (second highest percentage in the EU) or misleading /deceptive – 52% (highest percentage in the EU).

The top countries with the best overall consumer conditions are the UK, Ireland, Luxembourg, Austria, Finland, the Netherlands, Italy, Denmark, Germany, Belgium and Sweden, all of which are also above the EU average.
