Bulgaria is ready to send humanitarian aid to Libya where a pro-democracy uprising is fighting the regime of dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

According to Bulgaria's Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov, Bulgaria can aid the population in Libya with medical and food supplies.

"There are more and more indications of the shortage of medicines, food, and other supplies in all parts of Libya, not only in the western parts of the country around Tripoli but also in the eastern parts, which are currently occupied by the rebels," Mladenov said as cited by BNT.

He further noted that the government can send one more plane to collect Bulgarian citizens remaining in the North African country even though Bulgaria has already taken several measures to evacuate its nationals from Libya.

Bulgaria has also contributed to the international evacuation by committing a government plane to transporting foreign residents out of Libya.

"Bulgaria must demonstrate that it understands what is happening around it, and that it is committed to solving these problems," Mladenov commented.

He urged Europe to step up its calls for putting an end to the violence in Libya, and to introduce harsher sanctions against the Gaddafi regime.

At the same time, Mladenov believes that holding negotiations with Gaddafi should also be kept as an option.
