A group of 25 Bulgarian students visited the European Parliament on the day of the traditional Bulgarian holiday Baba Marta and gave martenitsi to to MEPs and employees.

The students from the Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna went to Brussels on the invitation of former Foreign Minister from the Bulgarian Socialist Party and current member of the European Parliament, Ivaylo Kalfin.

Since the morning, the enthusiastic students gave martenitsi to MEPs and employees and explained them about the Bulgarian tradition.

Bulgarian EU Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva and legendary football player Hristo Stoichkov, who visited the EP to discuss his trip to Burkina Faso as a Goodwill Ambassador, assisted the students and gathered all Bulgarian MEPs.

Celebrated on March 1, the traditional Bulgarian holiday Baba Marta (Grandma March) is believed to mark the beginning of spring.

On that day, everyone in Bulgaria can be seen with a martenitsa – a small piece of adornment, made of white and red yarn, which will be warn until around the end of the month (or the first time an individual sees a stork, swallow or budding tree - the first signs that spring has arrived).
