Egypt's public prosecutor has issued a travel ban and asset freeze on former President Hosni Mubarak and his family.

The Prosecutor's Office has frozen the money and assets of Mubarak's family and has forbid them to leave the country.

The order was issued while complaints against the family were being investigated and it applies to the ousted president, his wife Suzanne, their two sons Ala and Gamal and their wives, the BBC reported.

Mubarak, who ended his almost 30-year rule on February 11 after public protests, is believed to be living in his villa in Sharm el-Sheikh in poor health. He has not been seen or heard of publicly since he stepped down.

Egypt has already requested a number of governments to freeze the overseas assets of the Mubarak family over pressure from protesters and anti-corruption campaigners, who demanded investigation into the family's money, estimated anywhere from USD 1 B to USD 70 B.

However, the legal representative of the ousted president has denied reports that Mubarak amassed a fortune while in office.
