Libya's embattled dictator Muammar Gaddafi dismissed the UN sanctions imposed on and declared the "small group of rebels protesting against him" will be dealt with.

Gaddafi spoke on Sunday in a phone interview with Serbia's Belgrade-based Pink TV station, stating that Saturday's United Nations Security Council vote imposing travel and asset sanctions on him and close aides iwas null and void. He said that the situation in Libya was "calm" and that its people support him.

"Libya is safe, there are no conflicts, Tripoli is safe," he claimed on Sunday. "The Security Council could not see Tripoli is safe."

Late on Saturday, The UN Security Council voted unanimously to impose sanctions on Libya's Gaddafi regime over excessive use of force in dealing with the civil rebellion. The Council decided on arms embargo, asset freeze and referring Gaddafi to the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity. In a letter sent to the Council, the Libyan delegation at the UN declared support for the measures.

Meanwhile, forces fighting to topple Gaddafi seized the city of Zawiya, 50km (30 miles) from the capital Tripoli on Sunday. Corespondents said the centre and its immediate outskirts appeared to be wholly in the control of anti-Gaddafi forces.
