Bulgarian PM: Govt Vows to Decrease Defeats in Strasbourg

Bulgaria's PM Boyko Borisov has stated that the government is doing what it can to decrease the number of trials against the country at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg.

At a meeting on Wednesday, the cabinet approved EUR 156 00 to paid as compensations on eight trials against the country.

"The fact that this court exists and it sits on trials from all over Europe shows that the work of separate institutions cannot always be at its best. So all Bulgarian citizens, as members of the EU and the European Council, can submit their claims," Borisov said.

He explained that ECHR gives an opportunity to all people who do are not satisfied with the judiciary in their country to reach a higher instance in Europe.

The prime minister noted that besides lost cases, Bulgaria has also won many cases.

His statement was made at the meeting with Thorbjorn Jagland, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, who is on a two-day visit to Bulgaria.

Jagland said he supported the Bulgarian government's efforts to fight corruption and judiciary.

"Bulgaria is a nice and important member of the European Union, which also plays a constructive role in the EU," he said.

The secretary general added that he informed Borisov about the reform in ECHR and about the talks between the Council of Europe and the European Union for joining the EU to the European Convention of Human Rights.

"When the talks end, hopefully by the summer, Europe will be a one legal entity and there will be one Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. This will be a historic event for the continent," Jagland said.
