Libyan Justice Minister Mustafa Mohamed Abud Al Jeleil has resigned because of "excessive use of violence against government protesters. "

The Irish Times cites privately-owned Libyan newspaper Quryna, which reported Monday that it had spoken on the phone with the minister. However, there is no official confirmation for the resignation yet.

EU leaders have condemned the killing of more than 200 demonstrators in Libya, who protested against the 42-year rule of leader Muammar Gaddafi.

According to local doctors, at least 250 people have been killed in Libya since the anti-government rallies erupted on Wednesday and the Gadaffi ordered a crackdown on protesters.

Earlier on Monday, the leader's son, Sayf al-Islam, issued a warning of a looming civil war in the country after thousands of demonstrators clashed with police on Sunday.
