Romanian and Hungarian border police on Friday said that they had stopped a truck carrying 36 Afghans seeking to illegally enter Western Europe.

The driver of the vehicle was Bulgarian national, according to local media reports. He had declared a transport of motor oil from Greece to Germany.

The migrants were held and questioned by Romanian police.

Bulgaria and Romania, which have been coupled ever since their joint accession to the European Union in 2007, aim to enter the border-less Schengen zone in March this year, claiming that all requirements for it had been met.

Accession is uncertain, however, because of the vehement opposition of key EU member states, most notably France and Germany.
