Iranian Warships Heading to Suez Canal After All – Report

Two Iranian warships are heading towards the Suez canal on their way to Syria, the Iranian Press TV has reported, citing an unidentified Iranian Navy official.

The Navy official is reported saying that Iranians were in contact with authorities in Cairo to secure the Iranian vessels' passage.

According to the Suez canal rules, ships wishing to transit the waterway - which connects Red Sea and the Mediterranean - must give 24 hours notice. Only ships that don't meet safety requirements are banned from passage.

Earlier on Thursday, the Egyptian authorities claimed that no Iranian warships have requested to pass through the Canal yet.

It was Israel's Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman who first alarmed over Iran's move. On Wednesday, he stated that two Iranian warships were planning to head towards the Suez Canal, which he described as a "provocation that proves Iran's nerve and self-esteem is growing from day to day"

"Unfortunately, the international community is not showing readiness to deal with the recurring Iranian provocations," Lieberman said. "The international community must understand that Israel cannot ignore these provocations forever."
