Indian entrepreneur Narayan Murthy, founder of global software giant Infosys, says "compassionate capitalism" is the only solution to poverty and hunger, ills that he suffered on a trip from Bulgaria to Istanbul.

"I can understand the pain of hunger because I had experienced hunger once," Murthy said while addressing people at an event organized by Akshaya Patra Foundation, an NGO that runs the largest school meal program in the country.

He shared his awful experience when he was travelling from Bulgaria to Istanbul and remained hungry for 113 hours.

"I had not taken food or water for 113 hours."

"There are millions who are hungry and it is our responsibility to ensure that every kid is fed properly. If the kids are hungry, they cannot perform well in their studies. Compassionate capitalism should be practiced so that we can create hope for these children by providing them with decent education," he said.

A few years ago Murthy told BBC World Service's The Interview program that when he traveled to Bulgaria in the 1970s and encountered the Communist system, he got convinced definitively and once and for all, that that's not the system that he would enjoy being part of.

"I wanted to come back to India and conduct an experiment in creating wealth legally and ethically, and creating jobs, because I thought that was the best way of eliminating poverty. That's how Infosys was born."
