The people of Egypt are capable of creating a true democracy and a thriving economy, Bulgarian Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov has declared as Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak resigned after 18 days of massive protests.

"Today the people of Egypt opened a new page in the proud history of their country. After weeks of mass protests the Egyptians managed to gain back their basic rights and civil liberties that they were devoid of for decades. By stepping down from power President Hosni Mubarak made the right decision – paving the way for serious reforms that meet the just social, political, and economic demands of the protesters," Mladenov has stated on the success of the Egyptian revolution.

Now that Egypt has been taken over by the military expected to carry through a transition to greater democratization, the Bulgarian Foreign Minister believes that the major priority of the country must be a national dialogue to create a government capable of guaranteeing human rights and rule of law and of organizing free elections.

"I hope that the military will guarantee the peaceful transition to a democratic civil society. I believe that the people of Egypt have the strength to prove that democracy, economic and social prosperity and stability in the Middle East can go hand in hand. Egypt was the first Arab nation to lay the foundations of the peace process in the region. I expect that the success of the Egyptian people will be preserved through the demonstration of political will and wisdom in the name of stability and justice in the Middle East," Mladenov concludes.

In his 30 years as President of Egypt, Hosni Mubarak failed to visit Bulgaria and received a Bulgarian state leader only once in 2008.
