There will be an "important statement" soon from the office of Egypt's president, state TV reported.

The news came shortly after reports surfaced saying that President Hosni Mubarak has gone to the Egyptian Sinai city of Sharm el-Sheikh.

On Friday, a day after transferring some power to Vice President Omar Suleiman in an effort to quell weeks of protests, reports from Arab, Israeli and U.S. media outlets suggest Mubarak left the presidential palace.

His destination was unclear but he is rumored to still be in Egypt, possibly in Sharm el Sheik in southern Egypt.

After high hopes were squashed by President Hosni Mubarak's refusal to relinquish power, tens of thousands of Egyptians filled the streets of Cairo on Friday, perhaps the largest crowds yet in the 18 days of uprising.

All eyes fell on the powerful army as the protests were expected to gain momentum after the conclusion of midday prayers.

Analysts said the military could play a key role if demonstrations swell.
