Deporting EU citizens to their home countries based solely on their status as unemployed would violate the Union's legislation, Iliana Ivanova, a Bulgarian MEP stated, reiterating against a far-right Dutch MP.

Earlier on Wednesday, Louis Bontes, an MP for the Dutch anti-Islam PVV (Party for Freedom) said that people from Bulgaria and Romania and Poland should be deported back to their country of origin if they are out of work in the Netherlands,

"They are often drunk and are involved in petty crime," Bontes is quoted as saying for the website nu.nl., stating there is no legal barrier to deporting EU nationals from the open border area within five years of their arrival.

However, Iliana Ivanova, a MEP from the EPP has pointed out that the right of free movement is among the fundamental principles in EU's legislation and that it can not be infringed, even in cases of unemployment.

A possible deportation of EU nationals from the Netherlands to their home states could be seen as discrimination based on national origin, the Bulgarian MEP added.

"The EU newcomers contribute significantly to the better functioning of the common European market," according to Ivanova.
