Bulgaria will explicitly oppose to the proposed import of GMO-containing food products and livestock fodder in the EU.

"I received a demarche rom Argentina, Brazil, Canada and the US asking us to support their demand that EU allows GMO-containing food products and livestock fodder on its territory," Bulgaria's Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naydenov revealed on Wednesday before the Council of Ministers' regular sitting.

"I told the representatives of these four countries that I will definitely vote against their initiative at the EU Council of Ministers in Brussels. This is the policy of the Bulgarian government and we will not change it," Miroslav Naydenov.

On Wednesday, the Bulgarian Council of Ministers is expected to adopt Naydenov's proposition on banning the genetically modified MON 810 maize in the country. The ban is due to insects potentially developing resistance to the Bt toxin, which it contains, as well as due to the possibility that the toxin may be damaging for the soil.

Even though MON 810 was initially approved for use in the European Union in 1998, six countries - Austria, Hungary, Greece, France, Luxembourg, and most recently Germany, have already banned it.
