More than 219 people have died during the Tunisian protests which led to the ousting of the country's President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali.

The figure includes 72 people who died during prison riots, according to a week-long human rights team investigation

The Tunisian government previously said that 78 people had died in the clashes, although the opposition said the figure was higher.

The wave of rallies in Tunisia was sparked by the suicide of fruit and vegetable seller Mohammed Bouazizi, who torched himself last month after police confiscated his fruit cart, cutting off his source of income. As a result, Ben Ali fled Tunisia for Saudi Arabia on January 14.

Protests have sparked in other Arab countries, such as Egypt, Yemen and Jordan. According to unofficial data, announced by the United Nation Tuesday, over 300 have died and over 3 000 have been injured in the civil unrest shaking Egypt for eight days now
