Bulgaria has established a secure border control for the rest of the EU, a German delegation to inquire about the country's progress in covering the Schengen criteria, has stated.

"We understood how Bulgaria's border control works and were convinced that our decision to come and check the conditions," Hans-Peter Uhl, Chair of the delegation from the German Bundestag's internal affairs committee, said on Tuesday.

"There are still a couple of requirements that need to be fulfilled and I am sure they will be fulfilled," Uhl added, pointing out that, even the Balkans are a very important trade route for Europe, there are also used by the criminal world.

According to the conservative German MP, the EU should provide very strong support for Bulgaria concerning the control over its crucial outside border.

The German delegation visited the crucial Bulgarian-Turkish border, which was deemed highly problematic by the last technical report on Bulgaria's Schengen readiness, prepared on January 14.

The German group was shown the technical innovations at the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint, as well as the specialized facility for accommodation of illegal immigrants'near the Bulgarian-Turkish border – in the town of Lyubimets, which will be opened on March 15.

"Everything is perfectly done here," Hans-Peter Uhl said in Lyubimets.

Germany, together with France, the Netherlands and Finland has been voicing strong opposition to an imminent entry into Schengen of Bulgaria and Romania, pointing to worries about the status of the judiciary and law enforcement in the two countries given persisting problems with corruption and organized crime.

On Monday, Hans-Peter Uhl said that the Bulgarian judiciary must be put under an increased pressure in order for the judges' insusceptibility to corruption to be ensured.
