Bulgaria's Discrimination Protection Committee has applied to the United Nations for accreditation as a national watchdog on human rights.

The application has been presented to the Human Rights Committee and the Sub-Committee on Accreditation (SCA) of the International Coordinating Committee of National Institutions for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights (ICC).

SCA has the mandate to review and analyze accreditation applications and to make recommendations to ICC Bureau members on the compliance of applicants with the Paris Principles.

So far, the status of a national authority on human rights has been granted to 67 institutions worldwide, including those related to Discrimination Protection Committee in Europe, such as the Belgium's Center for Equal Opportunities, Danish Institute on Human Rights, etc.

If granted the status, Bulgaria's Discrimination Protection Committee will be included in the international system for protection of human rights.

It will also be able to participate independently in different monitoring mechanisms, trainings, conferences, different initiatives of the UN and in the development of programming documents.
