The Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition, which was trapped in Chile, has successfully reached its base on the Livingston Island.

The Bulgarian group flew with a Brazilian military plane from the Chilean Punta Arenas Port to the King George island, from where it arrived on Monday to the Livingston island with the Spanish "Las Palmas" ship.

As a result of strikes, induced by a hike in natural gas prices on behalf of the Chilean government, the Bulgarian expedition, which is returning from the Bulgarian Antarctica base on the King George was trapped in the city of Punta Arenas, while the Bulgarian expedition of scientists arriving to take over from them for the next few months on the neighboring Livingstone island was stranded on the Argentina-Chile border.

The two groups were blocked for more than a week. The returning expedition returned successfully to Sofia on Sunday.

To make up for the serious delay, the members of the Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition at Livingston now have to work 12-15 hours a day, leader of the expedition, Prof. Hristo Pimpirev, has explained.

In livingston, The Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition is involved in a number of projects aimed at defining the extent of global warming. In earlier 2010, Bulgaria's Environment and Water Agency funded a project for the research of penguin plumage.
