A suicide bomber killed at least 31 people at Moscow's busiest airport, Domodedovo, on Monday afternoon, prompting a major security alert in the Russian capital.

At least 20 more have been severely injured, the Russian health authorities say.

The blast at Domodedovo International Airport took place at around 4.40 p.m. local time in the luggage claim area for arriving passengers. It was caused by a suicide bomber, RIA Novosti states.

Three men are suspected of plotting the explosion.

The blast was equivalent to 7 kilograms of TNT (15 pounds), Interfax reported, citing an unidentified law enforcement official.

The explosion is the worst terror attack in Russia since last March, when twin bombings killed 40 people in the Moscow subway. More than 20 million passengers a year travel through Domodedovo, which is the country's largest airport.
