The Prosecutor's Office asked Monday for a sentence of 4 years behind bars for the former Director of the Bulgarian National Revenue Agency (NRA), Maria Murgina.

Murgina is charged with abuse of power on two counts – the first is related to directions to reduce taxes for a Pleven-based company and the second – to wrong taxation of the former owner of the Kremikovtzi steel mill, Valentin Zahariev. She also faces the magistrates for submitting a declaration with false information about a property owned by her in the beach town of Sozopol and for using her position to force the Director of the Regional NRA Office in the Danube city of Silistra to resign.

The probe against Murgina was launched in February 2009, after the State Agency for National Security (DANS) stripped the former NRA Director of her right to access classified information and amidst mounting accusations of huge organized draining of Value Added Tax (VAT) and political cover-up.

The Sofia City Court is expected to issue a verdict Tuesday.
