The first part of the Bulgaria's 19th Bulgarian Antarctic expedition, which was blocked in Chile, returned to Sofia Saturday, the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute has informed.

The returning expedition arrived at 13:30 local time with a flight from Rome. A Mongolian geologist who worked on his own project also travelled with the Bulgarian group.

As a result of strikes, induced by a hike in natural gas prices on behalf of the Chilean government, the Bulgarian expedition, which is returning from the Bulgarian Antarctica base on the Livingston Island was trapped in the city of Punta Arenas, while the Bulgarian expedition of scientists arriving to take over from them for the next few months in Antarctica was stranded on the Argentina-Chile border.

The two groups were blocked for a week, together with hundreds of tourists.

Both expeditions consist of 7 Bulgarian scientists. The arriving expedition is expected to reach their basis at the Saint George island by Monday.
