PES Diss Bulgarian Govt on Rule of Law, Nationalist Alliance

The Party of European Socialists has issued an angry statement expressing dissatisfaction at the political life in Bulgaria.

The European Socialists express their disappointment from the fact that "tapped conversations are at the center of politics in Bulgaria," and ask for more clarity about the possible involvement of senior politicians in abuse of power and corruption that the tapes suggest.

PES moreover express their low regard of the fact that PM Boyko Borisov center-right GERB cabinet, which has a 117 out of 240 MP minority in Parliament, has had to rely on the support of nationalist party Ataka.

"In order to guarantee that the vote of confidence he tabled to Parliament will pass, Borisov did not shy away from negotiating with extremist rightists Ataka, well known for their ultranationalist and anti-immigration slogans," says the PES release as quoted by the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party.

PES chair Poul Nyrup Rasmussen has expressed his personal concern about this alliance, seeing it in the context of a larger trend in Europe in which conservative and other traditional rightist parties "voluntarily enter into coalition with the extremist right."
