Bulgarian Health Ministry Launches 'Healthy' Bread Probe

Bulgaria's Health Ministry is launching a large-scale check of breads sold in the country with labels "diet" and "healthy."
The check will involve all 28th Regional Directorates for Public Health Protection and Control. All bread-manufacturing facilities will be checked.
Inspectors will test the bread for artificial coloring, salt and sugar content, presence of ashes and others.
Violators will be fined BGN 500 to BGN 4 000.
Recent tests of the Bulgarian "Active Consumers" Association showed that the large majority of breads on the market, labeled as diet or healthy, have nothing to do with the alleged name. High content of residue ashes, meaning the bread has too much salt, and other additives, such as coffee grinds, were discovered.
The tests were carried out by the SGS lab in the Black Sea City of Varna and were ordered by the Association.
