A tanker carrying 2400 tones of sulphuric acid has overturned in the Rhine river in Germany, the BBC reported.

According to the police and the local authorities, two crew members are missing and two other were rescued.

The tanker sank near St Goarshausen, south of Koblenz, and it is not yet clear whether any of its cargo leaked.

The exact reason for the incident is not known yet. Thawing ice and snow have caused recent flooding of the Rhine river, but it has not been stated whether the high river levels caused the sinking.

German media reported that the rescuers are using thermal imaging equipment to help find the missing people.

The shipping authority says the tanker was heading from Ludwigshafen to Antwerp in Belgium.
