Bulgaria's PM Boyko Borisov has no right to spy on any Bulgarian citizen, including ministers, said the leader of the right-wing Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) party, Ivan Kostov.

He commented on Borisov's statement that he did not see anything wrong in spying on ministers, deputy prime ministers, and agencies' heads and he added that "ministers must work knowing they are watched all the time."

"No one had the right to spy on anyone. And ministers do not have the right to agree on being tapped by proving in this way that they are not corrupted," Kostov said.

Since the scandal about taped phone conversations of the Head of Bulgaria's Customs Agency, General Vanyo Tanov, broke off last week, most members of the cabinet – Finance Minister Simeon Djankov, Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov, Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naydenov, Minister on Regional Developmen Rosen Plevneliev, Education Minister Sergey Ignatov and Transport Minister Alexander Tsvetkov – said they did not find anything wrong with being tapped.

Kostov stated that whether eavesdropping was conducted by Borisov or by a private person who has the needed equipment, it has an impact on the national security system and it shows that the government is not doing its job to protect the country.

"We live in a democracy and there is an impact on the national security system. Ministers' conversations should not be published in the newspapers. If a private eavesdropper is involved, then he should be found and punished," he said.

The DSB leader noted that his party will insist that Tanov states to the parliamentary committee for combating corruption the names of the companies, which are favored for smuggling and which are mentioned by him in the recorded conversations.
