Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci's Democratic Party of Kosovo (DPK) has won two out of the three regions in the country holding a partial general elections rerun, according to observers.

The results may have a serious impact on the formation of the new government. The Democratic Party has won 90% of the votes, according to NGOs which have monitored the election process. However, the total vote count is less than the one registered in December, leading to DPK losing some 20 000 votes on a national level.

Opposition representatives have claimed that the Democratic Party may eventually lose 3 to 5% of their result when all votes from December and January are counted.

Following the registration of serious irregularities in the 12 December general elections in three municipalities in Kosovo (Skenderaj/Srbica, Drenas/Gllogovac and Decan/Decani), voters in those areas returned to the polls on Sunday for a repeat vote that is under heavy international scrutiny.

Parliamentary elections were also repeated in some polling stations in Lipljan, Mali?evo and Kosovska Mitrovica.

The Sunday elections were monitored by representatives of the international community, with EU Special Representative in Kosovo Pieter Feith in charge of coordinating the election observation mission to Kosovo.

Oppositional parties and impartial observers have alarmed that Sunday's elections have been marked by irregularities, too.

In December 2010, Hashim Thaci was accused of being the head of a mafia organization , linked with the traffic of organs of Serb prisoners after the 1998-99 conflict in the Balkan country. According to a report, prepared by Swiss Council of Europe deputy Dick Marty, Thaci and other senior commanders of the ethnic Albanian guerrilla group the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) are have set up the organ traffic.
