'Bugs' Sales Soar over Bulgaria's Spying Mania

Bulgarian private businesses have launched several promotions for the sale of spying bugs over increased competition, flared by eavesdropping mania, in the country, the daily "Standard" writes Monday.

The internet site www.srs.bg for example is offering the service "spying of a cell phone" for half price – down to BGN 250 from BGN 450 before New Year's. The offer includes special software, which upon being installed on a cell phone, turns into a bug.

The company further has 48 cell phone models, which can be turned into special surveillance devices in two days. They can be given as gifts to partners or spouses. In order to begin the spying, a special message must be sent to the phone making possible for conversations to be followed online and short text messages to be read minutes after being sent or received along with the complete phone log.

Over all this, it is reported that businessmen now refuse to accept cell phones as gifts and flock to purchase equipment to intercept bugs' signals and silencers for their automobiles.

Experts, cited by "Standard," say in addition to these gadgets, there are companies offering private spying done by teams of professionals. Police is currently monitoring two such businesses, which use top-of-the-line professional equipment valued at USD 700 000 and being close to the one available to western intelligence services.

Police say all of the above is illegal, but in order to try the perpetrators, they must be caught at the scene, when they are doing the spying.
