The 15th edition of the Sofia International Film Festival will begin March 4 and its program will consist of about 200 feature films, with the main focus being on French cinema, the organizers have announced.
Bosnian film director and screenwriter Danis Tanovic, best known for his 2001 movie "No Man's Land", which won an Academy Award, will present the award for Best Balkan Movie in Sofia.
The festival is scheduled to begin March 4 at the National Palace of Culture (NDK). The event will continue until March 13, with an additional program in Sofia, Burgas, Plovidv and Varna until March 20.
The program includes the sections International Feature Film Competition (Grand Prix for First or Second Film), The Big Five, Balkan Competition, New Bulgarian Cinema, and Bulgarian Short Films, among others.
Since 1997 more than 1,600 feature films and documentaries have been screened within the festival's framework. More than 1,000 distinguished guests have attended, including established professionals such as Wim Wenders, Alan Parker, Nikita Mikhalkov, Andrei Konchalovsky and Emir Kusturica.
The event is organized by ArtFest in conjunction with the Municipality of Sofia and in partnership with the Ministry of Culture, NDK, the National Film Centre and Bulgarian National Television, in addition to several other multinational cultural sponsors.
In February 2010, the Sofia Film Fest received accreditation form the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF) as a competitive specialized feature film festival.
