The regional leadership of the Bulgaria’s ruling party GERB in the city of Shumen has demanded resignation from the mayor Krasimir Kostov over problems with the heating utility Toplofikatsiya.

At present, Toplofikatsiya-Shumen is working with only half of its capacity because it receives 800 cubic meters of gas per hour instead of the necessary 1,700 cubic meters. The reason is the unpaid bills to the provider Bulgargaz.

Toplofikatsiya-Shumen owes more than BGN 15 M to Bulgargaz for previous periods and was supposed to begin its deferred payments of obligations until December 20.

In November, the municipality of Shumen signed a contract with a private investor, who was supposed to assume the obligations of Toplofikatsiya against the construction of cogeneration facilities.

However, the Shumen municipality has not yet transferred its shares to the investor and Bulgargaz may suspend gas deliveries to the city.

The problem was the reason for the demand of the regional GERB leadership for resignation of the mayor Krasimir Kostov.

Earlier, however, Kostov accused the MPs from GERB of not doing anything to solve the problem with Toplofikatsiya.

In his words, GERB had no reason to demand his resignation and he defined the request as a “political action.”
