Sofia’s Brussels Blvd will be equipped with cameras, which will monitor the compliance of the speed regulations, the mayor of Sofia, Yordanka Fandakova, has announced.

The decision was taken after a chain car accident occurred Wednesday morning.

Fandakova said that the employee from the Sofia City Hall Inspectorate, who checked the road conditions on the boulevard, has been sanctioned because she had not reported any problems.

The City Hall also fined by BGN 1,700 the company in charge of the snow removal and treating icy sections of the road, which is a busy thoroughfare connecting the airport with downtown Sofia, and has several bridges and overpasses.

“Their responsibility is to monitor the situation and react adequately. But let’s not forget that the main reason for the chain car accident, according to the Traffic Police, was the inappropriate speed and the thick fog,” Fandakova said.

She warned drivers to be very careful and added that there will be an increased number of traffic police during the holidays.
