The employees from the Sofia City Hall Inspectorate who were doing a check of the road condition on Sofia's "Brussels" Blvd have been sanctioned.

The information was reported Wednesday by the Sofia City Hall.

A chain car accident occurred early Wednesday, around 9 am, with anywhere between 20 and 50 automobiles involved, according to different witness accounts.

The City Hall employees did the check at 5:30 am, but failed to report the treacherous conditions.

The City Hall has also fined the company in charge of the snow removal and treating icy sections of the road, which is a busy thoroughfare connecting the airport with downtown Sofia, and has several bridges and overpasses.

According to police reports, the road is still closed for traffic and drivers are advised to use the old road to get to the airport.

Many cars were damaged in the accident, but there are no reported injuries. The cars were moving at low speed over the dense fog, which also blocked the work of the airport, forcing it to divert flights to Plovdiv and Bucharest.
