Montenegro's Veteran Prime Minister Steps Down

Montenegro's Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic has resigned on Tuesday, thus ending his 20-year rule in the Balkan country.

Djukanovic also announced his Deputy Finance Minister Igor Luksic will take over instead, but that his ruling Democratic Party of Socialists will have to make final decision.

"I am confident minister Luksic has the capability required. The ruling party has the right to propose who should lead the government, we have initiated that process," Djukanovic said.

Milo Djukanovic has served three consecutive terms as Prime Minister from 1991 to 1998, later President of Montenegro (1998 - 2002|) and Prime Minister again. He is also the long-term President of the Democratic Party of Socialists of Montenegro Djukanovic, the longest-serving statesman in the Balkans, will focus on his private business.

The news comes just 3 days after Montenegro was formally given the status of an EU candidate country at the EU Council summit in Brussels.
