The Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey was closed briefly Monday morning EST over a suspicious package.

After about an hour of delays, the Port Authority gave the all clear and passengers were again allowed into the terminal, MSNBC reported.

The FBI said in a statement that the device that caused alarm appeared to be a computer monitor emitting small amounts of radiation, which is normal for such a device.

The package was discovered behind a ticket counter were checked bags are screened.

The entire incident led the authorities to evacuate Terminal A of Newark Airport where the US flights of American Airlines are based.

Shortly before 8 am local time, they even stopped the traffic to the airport until the content of the package was found not to pose any threat.

The days before Christmas mark one of the busiest periods for US and international air travel, and the authorities in the US and EU are in high alert.
