95% of Surveillance Devices Used to Spy on Bulgarians' Phones

Almost all special surveillance devices used in Bulgaria are applied for listening to and taping of phone conversations, the National anti-Crime and anti-Terrorism Forum (NAAF) announced Saturday.

NAAF data shows that 95% of the devices are related to phone spying; less than 3% of them enter the Courts as evidence, and less than 1% is related to verdicts.

The Chair of NAAF, and former head of the Central Unit for Combating Organized Crime (CSBOP), Tihomir Stoychev, also commented on the recent revelations 45% of current Bulgarian diplomats have been collaborators of the former Communist State Security (DS), saying they have nothing to be ashamed of since they served their county under the then Bulgarian Constitution.

Stoychev pointed out, Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, himself, had and has connections with a number of former agents, adding that in addition to them, it is high time to talk about the people who destroyed Bulgarian economy – the industry and the farming.

Last week, the conservative Order, Law and Justice (RZS) party voiced in the Parliament strong opposition to the frequent use of special surveillance devices, saying it was a threat to democracy.
