Bulgarian Mayor Arrested for Taking Bribe

The Mayor of the town of Beloslav, near the Black Sea capital Varna, has been arrested, the spokesperson of the Varna Regional Prosecutors Office informs Saturday.

Emil Dichev has been detained on December 17, immediately after receiving a bribe of BGN 5 000.

The following police search discovered over BGN 150 000 in different currencies in Dichev's office.

The Mayor is charged with receiving a bribe and faces 3 to 10 years of jail time and a fine of up to BGN 20 000.

Dichev is held for 72 hours before facing the judge. The Prosecutor says they will ask for permanent detention on Monday.

The arrest is a follow-up of joint investigation of the Varna Regional Prosecutors Office, the police and the State Agency for National Security (DANS).
