Bulgaria's Education Minister, Sergey Ignatov, announced he was considering moving the start of the school year from September 15 to September 1.

Ignatov reminded the start day in Bulgaria has traditionally been September 1 until 1921 when the cabinet of the Bulgarian Agrarian Union (BZNS) moved it to September 15 to allow children helping collecting the crop.

The Minister, however, points out he was still hesitant, since the change would mean a new break around the end of October or a longer Christmas break.

"The final say will belong to experts and parents," Ignatov promised, adding even if the idea receives approval, the change won't happen next year over the fact the School Bill is being currently debated.

The Bill will be submitted to the Parliament in the first three months of 2011 and the forecast is for long debates, especially in the light of the upcoming local and presidential elections, Ignatov explained.
