Hundreds of passengers are stranded at the airport of Bulgaria's capital Sofia Friday, due to inclement weather, Darik radio reports.

Flights to Frankfurt are canceled, while the one to Amsterdam is over four hours late now. The latter is used by many passengers to connect to US-bound flights.

A number of other flights are also delayed and it is not yet known when the airport will resume normal schedule.

The Bulgarian carrier "Bulgaria Air" already announced they do not reimburse passengers for stay and accommodations when there are force major circumstances, but would provide food and beverages to those who have already checked in.

The delays and the cancellations have been triggered by bad weather all over Europe. The Amsterdam airport only services a minimum number of flights – 20 per hour.

If a flight is delayed more than five hours, passengers can decide not to board the plane and will receive reimbursement for the full amount of the ticket.

The airport of the Black Sea city of Varna was closed early Friday morning.
