Heavy snow and strong wind caused the closing of the Sofia International Airport and the port in the Black Sea city of Varna, the Bulgarian News Agency has announced.

The track at the Sofia International Airport is under cleaning. A change in the situation is expected around noon.

The port in Varna is closed for all vessels until the speed of the wind, which is currently 14-15 m/s, drops.

The snow cover in Varna reached 15 cm. The traffic police registered a record-high number of car accidents in the past 24 hours - 82, in which two pedestrians have been hurt. Their lives are out of danger.

The roads across the country are passable in winter conditions. There are icy sections in some places, which are being cleaned and sanded.

The road Aksakovo-Kichevo in northeastern Bulgaria is closed. All trucks moving along the road Provadia-Aytos must have chains and be without trailers.

Code Orange, which signifies “dangerous weather”, has been raised in five regions in the country – Silistra, Dobrich, Varna, Burgas and Shumen. Blizzards and drifts are expected, the National Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences has announced.

According to the meteorologists, Southeastern Bulgaria faced the largest snowfall on Thursday.
