Bulgaria's Police Boss Urges Full Use of Schengen Information System

Bulgaria should take advantage of the Schengen Information System (SIS) because it is a powerful tool against organized crime, Bulgaria's Secretary General to the Interior Ministry, Kalin Georgiev, has announced.

His statement was made at a conference, organized by Interpol in the French city of Lyon, which focused on assessment of the threats in front of Southeast Europe, connected to crime.

The conference was first of its kind and it featured operational leaders of police structures in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro and Serbia, together with high-rank representatives of the European Commission, UNODC, Europol and other international organizations.

All of them formulated a message to the participants in the forum. The Schengen Information System was the accent of Georgiev, who presented a two-year project for combating organized crime in Southeast Europe.

The conference is focused on the accomplishments and results, achieved from the project on Southeast Europe within the two-year program.

Bulgaria is a partner in the international project, which focuses on countries in Southeast Europe, whose police leaders are members of Southeast Europe Police Chiefs Association (SEPCA).

The association, together with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), are financing and supporting the project, which unites actions for combating organized crime groups, in spite of their nationality, which work on the territory of Southeast Europe.

At the forum, Georgiev presented Bulgaria's participation as a partner is different actions and described the priorities for the second year of the united actions within the program.
