In 2009, Bulgarians had the lowest GDP per inhabitant, expressed in purchasing power standards, among the EU member states, according to data from Eurostat.

The data from the statistical office of the European Union showed that in 2009 Bulgaria has a GDP per inhabitant 44% of the average for the 27 EU member states.

Romania is second, with a GDP per inhabitant 46% of the EU average in 2009.

The same year, Luxembourg had 271% of the EU average, followed by the Netherlands (131%), Ireland (127%), Austria (124%) and Denmark (121%).

Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Finland and the UK were between 10% and 20% above the average, with 118%, 116%, 116%, 113% and 112%, respectively.

Other countries like Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Portugal, Malta and Slovakia were between 10% and 30% lower than the average for the EU countries, with 88%, 82%, 80%, 79% and 73%, respectively.

The Eurostat data was based on revised purchasing power parities, and the latest GDP and population figures.
