Venice Commission to Announce Opinion on Bulgarian Draft Laws

The Council of Europe's Venice Commission will state its opinion on the draft amendments to the law on Judicial Power and to the Criminal Procedure Code in Bulgaria, at its 85th plenary session on Friday.

The draft amendments are the Bulgarian authority's response to the problems in the fight against organised crime and corruption in their country raised by the reports of the European Commission under the Co-operation and Verification Mechanism.

On 19 July 2010, the Permanent Representation of Bulgaria to the Council of Europe, on behalf of the Parliament of Bulgaria, asked for the Venice Commission's opinion on the draft Laws amending the Law on Judicial Power and the Criminal Procedure Code of Bulgaria.

The Venice, Commission, officially entitled the European Commission for Democracy Through Law,is an advisory body of the Council of Europe, composed of independent experts in the field of constitutional law.
